Description

Adaptive Adventures is honered to partner with World Chicago and the International Sport Visitor program for a day of kayaking at the Skokie Lagoons.

WorldChicago is excited to be facilitating the U.S. Department of State’s Sports Visitor Program this summer. The program, whose primary theme is promoting disability rights and inclusion, will bring 16 participants, 16-26 (with and without lower body disabilities) from Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan, and Thailand to Chicago from June 22June 30, 2018.

As a bit of background, the Sports Visitor Program brings non-elite youth athletes and coaches to the United States to explore U.S. culture, society, and sport as well as promote positive social development, with a particular focus on leadership and empowerment. The participants’ experience will include devoted time for on-the-field sports training and time spent off-the-field in classroom workshops, community engagement, and site visits that deepen participants’ understanding of the U.S. Through the exchange program, the participants will learn techniques and best practices for playing/coaching as well as gain a better understanding of U.S. disability rights, civil society and sporting culture in the United States.

Mission: Adaptive kayaking program allows individuals interested in beginning or resuming kayaking after an injury or disability to develop and/or practice the necessary physical, psychosocial and cognitive skills in a safe environment.

Vision: Adaptive kayaking program is directed toward achieving and maintaining optimal levels of independence, productivity, and well being, as well as enter/re-enter the mainstream of community life.

Description of Program: Participants meet with the CTRS and Adaptive Adventures staff individually to assess safety, kayaking abilities, endurance level, and proper fitting of equipment (kayak and paddle).  Small group treatment sessions will include discussions on benefits of exercise, motivational techniques (i.e. charting progress in time, distance and/or terrain), training and practice on kayaking skills, water etiquette, kayaking safety and dealing with emergencies. Kayaking groups will consist of learning about and engaging in kayaking opportunities in the home communities. The goal of the kayaking program is for each participant to be at a functionally independent level for participation in community kayaking.
