Summary

Introductory adaptive cycling program for individuals in the Chicagoland area.

Description

Mission: Adaptive cycling program allows individuals interested in beginning or resuming cycling after an injury or disability to develop and/or practice the necessary physical, psychosocial and cognitive skills in a safe environment.

Vision: Adaptive cycling program is directed toward achieving and maintaining optimal levels of independence, productivity, and well being, as well as enter/re-enter the mainstream of community life.

Description of Program: Participants meet with the Adaptive Adventures staff to assess safety, cycling abilities, endurance level, and proper fitting of equipment (cycle and helmet).  Group sessions will include discussions on benefits of exercise, motivational techniques (i.e. charting progress in time and/or distance), training and practice on cycle maintenance, riding skills, trail/road etiquette, cycling safety, and dealing with emergencies. Cycling groups will consist of learning about and engaging in cycling opportunities in the home communities. The goal of the cycling program is for each participant to be at a functionally independent level for participation in community cycling.
