Description

A specially designed 'beach party' kayak and paddleboard program in partnership between Craig Hospital and Adaptive Adventure. This is custom course for Craig Hospital CTRS, which will introduce participants to a kayak and paddlboard progression. We are seeking land and water volunteers for safety and rigging teams. We will train! 

A custom course between Craig Hospital CTRS and Adaptive Adventures for a inpatient beach party. Participants will enjoy a beachside meal together along with plenty of time to paddle in kayaks and paddle boards, with discussion of how to use our adaptive tools to comtinue in their physical therapy and process toward independence, once in their homes with friends and family. 

Description of Program: Participants meet with the Craig Hospital CTRS and Adaptive Adventures staff individually to assess safety, kayaking abilities, endurance level, and proper fitting of equipment (kayak and paddle).  Small group treatment sessions will include discussions on benefits of exercise, motivational techniques (i.e. charting progress in time, distance and/or terrain), training and practice on kayaking skills, water etiquette, kayaking safety and dealing with emergencies. Kayaking or paddle board groups will consist of learning about and engaging in kayaking opportunities in the home communities. The goal of the kayaking program is for each participant to be at a functionally independent level for participation in community kayaking.  

Expected Outcomes:

  1. Physical: improved/maintained overall fitness, balance, coordination, gross motor function, visual spatial skills, strength, endurance, coordination, range of motion
  2. Social: increased social interaction, social appropriateness, improve cooperation/competition skills
  3. Cognitive: increased ability to follow/perform multiple steps, improved receptive and expressive communication, safety awareness, processing speed, knowledge of activity benefits and adaptation
  4. Emotional: improved mood and self-esteem, decreased symptoms of depression, stress and anxiety
