Join Adaptive Adventures, Kayak Chicago and Scheck & Siress for a fun filled evening on the Chicago River and the fireworks. We will be paddling a total of six miles, three miles each way. Whether you have an amputation, a spinal cord injury, limited mobility due to MS or other conditions, we have opportunities for you and your family. Single and tandem kayaks are available.

Mission: Adaptive kayaking programs allows individuals interested in beginning or resuming kayaking after an injury or disability to develop and/or practice the necessary physical, psychosocial and cognitive skills in a safe environment. Being a 6-mile paddle, this event is designed for experienced (and stronger) paddlers.

Vision: Adaptive kayaking program is directed toward achieving and maintaining optimal levels of independence, productivity, and well being, as well as enter/re-enter the mainstream of community life.

Description of Program: Participants meet with the prosthetists of Scheck & Siress and Adaptive Adventures staff individually to assess safety, kayaking abilities, endurance level, and proper fitting of equipment (kayak and paddle).  Small group treatment sessions will include discussions on benefits of exercise, motivational techniques (i.e. charting progress in time, distance and/or terrain), training and practice on kayaking skills, water etiquette, kayaking safety and dealing with emergencies. Kayaking groups will consist of learning about and engaging in kayaking opportunities in the home communities. The goal of the kayaking program is for each participant to be at a functionally independent level for participation in community kayaking.
